Congratulations to Our Book Week Stars!

As part of our Book Week, each phase held a special competition to celebrate reading. The standard of entries was incredibly high and it was a very difficult task choosing an overall winner for each phase. I am sure you will all join me in congratulating the following children who were awarded 1st prize for their fabulous work.

Upper KS2: ‘MC’ (5B) for her fabulous digital media advert for ‘Liz Zip Mouth’ by Jacqueline Wilson.

Lower KS2: ‘KD’ (4C) for her fantastic book review for ‘The Firework Makers’ Daughter‘ by Phillip Pullman.

KS1: ‘CM’ (2A) for his fantastic character review of the ‘Wicked Witch’ from the fairytale Hansel and Gretel.

FS: ‘KM’ (RA) for his fantastic writing about the ‘Big Bad Wolf!’

The winners were taken on a special visit to Waterstones Book Store last Friday afternoon to choose their prize.

Just to remind you that you still have time to ‘spend’ the World Book Day Book Tokens as they are valid until 25th March 2012.

Book Week Celebrations

Children throughout the school thoroughly enjoyed all the exciting events and activities to celebrate Marton’s Book Week.

Foundation Stage: The children really enjoyed all the fun and exciting activities around the fairy tale of ‘The Three Little Pigs’, including role play, story writing, building the Little Pigs’ houses and huffing and puffing to blow them all down!  It was great to see so many Mums and Dads joining in with Foundation Stage’s sharing books sessions.

KS1: The children were really enthusiastic about their work on fairy tales which included working with artists on settings and transforming their learning area into a fairy tale woodland and a visit to the Grand Theatre to watch a production of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.  The children, as always, were exceptionally well behaved and a credit to our school.

KS2: Children enjoyed exploring different aspects of fictional writing through special themed days throughout the week including characterisation, settings, authors and book reviews.

The week ended with a spectacular character day and a special visit from Cruella De Vil!

It was wonderful to see so many children joining in the fun.  The costumes were fabulous!

A special thank you to everyone who supported our Book Week celebrations but especially: Mrs McKellar, Mr Kitching, Miss Andrews, Mr Malin, Mrs Turner and Mrs Wheatley for accompanying KS1 to the theatre; Miss Eden Kippax for teaching drama to KS2; Mrs Celine Wyatt, Blackpool’s Cultural Officer, for supporting our work with the Grand Theatre, Vanessa Card ‘artist’ for working with children and staff in KS1 and Mr and Mrs Pack for arranging the refreshments for our story events.

Year 5 Support ‘Happy House’

The ‘Happy House’ charity was set up by a Blackpool couple, Sue and Dave, who were previously hoteliers who went over to Kenya for a holiday to the Watamu area.  They saw the terrible conditions that some of the street children were living in, either orphaned, abandoned or cruelly abused and decided they wanted to create an orphanage called ‘The Happy House’ where these street children could grow up in a safe and happy environment.  The orphanage also has a school now where the children are educated.
Y5 have adopted the charity and have already made links with the children at ‘Happy House’. They will be organising fund raising event throughout the remainder of the year and ask for your support in their work.

Elizabeth Gomm from the charity was so impressed with our children that we feature on their blog – just follow the link to see!  http://childrenofwchildrenofwatamu.blogspot.com/

HALF TERM HOLIDAY

Just to remind you that we close for the Half Term Holidays on Thursday 9th February, at 3:30 p.m.

We open again for the new term on Monday, 20th February at 8:50 a.m.

Victorian Glee

Last Friday, 3rd February children in Y2 and Y5 thoroughly enjoyed a ‘Victorian Glee Day’ with Matt Baker, a famous musical theatre producer, to support their learning in History.  The highlight of the show involved the children enthusiastically performing a variety of Victorian songs to celebrate Blackpool’s past.

Schools Alive

Congratulations to Class 5B, our School Choir and Dance Club for their magnificent performance of ‘Oliver’ for Schools Alive at the Grand Theatre last Thursday evening. A special well done also, to Teigan who represented Marton in Blackpool Youth Band’s performance.  For many of the children, this was their first public show and they were an absolute credit to our school.  I feel extremely proud of them all.

I am sure you will all join me in thanking Mrs Brookes, Mrs Walton, Mrs Docherty, Mrs Forshaw and Mrs Hammond for all their dedication and hard work in rehearsing with the children.  Thank you also to Mrs Norbury, Mrs Whitaker and Mrs Cox for accompanying the children to this event and to Mrs Kippax for making costumes and accessories.
